Effective training? What matters is the experience

Training is central to the growth of organizations, and today more and more companies are aware of this and decide to invest in learning to develop the potential of their people. But good intentions are not enough (often not even when backed by a good budget). A strategy is needed, and so is the ability to listen to people, understand their real needs and aspirations, in order to involve them and make training effective. In short, an effective learning experience must be designed.
The importance of corporate training
Corporate training includes the activities and processes that enable companies and organizations to improve the skills and knowledge of their workforce, align them with their goals, and gain a competitive advantage.
In general, Corporate Learning covers a wide range of activities, such as training courses, workshops, coaching sessions, and more, designed and delivered to improve individual and collective employee performance, increase productivity, and encourage the development and acquisition of new talent. Developing corporate learning activities is beneficial both for the company and for its staff. Individual workers see their hard and soft skills improve, along with teamwork and productivity, generating better business results. They feel more encouraged by their company to take on new challenges and are able to adapt to the continuous evolution of the labor market.
Companies and organizations, on the other hand, enjoy several benefits. First of all, corporate training leads staff to develop their skills and learn new ones, improving both individual and collective performance. Typically, improving the work of the individual leads to an overall improvement in performance, which can translate into increased productivity. In addition, there are also consequences in terms of cohesion and team spirit, a very useful element, for example, in conflict management. All this makes it possible to have a positive impact on how the company operates, making the company itself much more cutting-edge than the competition.
The Learning Experience
To keep up with the evolution of the working landscape, corporate training must also change and evolve, looking for new ways to be implemented. In recent years, several online training and coaching programs have emerged, but innovations do not include only the use of the web. Experiential training, or corporate learning experience, shifts the focus increasingly from “how to teach” to “how to learn.”
People and their needs at the center of learning
At the center are therefore the learners, the people to whom the training is addressed, for whom a real experience that guides learning must be designed, generating positive feelings and therefore engagement. A supporting narrative is needed to involve people and convey the importance and value of training, and user-friendly tools are needed that allow flexible access to training content, so that each learner can personalize the experience according to their needs.
The advantages of the Learning Experience
An effective Learning Experience brings many benefits. Among these:
Greater learner engagement: a well-designed learning experience can significantly increase the level of learner engagement, making them more motivated and interested in the content.
Better learning: content formats, tools for accessing them, and collaboration experiences promote the transmission of skills and know-how, which is then the goal of training.
Increased motivation and autonomy: When the Learning Experience is well structured, learners become more autonomous in their learning path and are often more motivated to pursue further knowledge and skills.Continuous monitoring: Assessment of learning is also part of the Learning Experience: a structured path makes it possible to define valuable KPIs and carry out continuous monitoring, providing information to the learners themselves so they become aware of their progress.
Assessment: The Learning Experience includes every aspect of the experience lived by learners, and therefore also the phase of assessing the training objectives achieved, perhaps with final learning tests, and with celebratory moments that add value to completed paths.
The elements of the Learning Experience
The Learning Experience must be customized to the needs of people and companies, but to build it, some elements must necessarily be taken into consideration:
Active involvement: Learning is more effective when learners are actively involved in the process, rather than passively informed. This can include discussions, group projects, and practical activities.
Relevant and contextualized content: The learning material should be directly relevant to learners' interests and professional needs, and should be presented in a context that facilitates practical application.
Continuous feedback: Feedback is crucial for learning, as it allows learners to understand their mistakes and ways to improve. Feedback should be timely, constructive, and specific.
Flexibility and accessibility: Learning resources should be accessible to learners with different needs and learning styles, and should allow a certain degree of flexibility in terms of when and how learners can access the content.
Integrated technology: Effective use of technology can improve the learning experience, making resources more accessible, increasing interactivity, and providing new ways of expression for learners.
Social support and collaboration: Learning is often more effective when it takes place in a social context, where learners can collaborate and learn from one another.
Meaningful assessment: Assessments should go beyond standardized tests and include methods that allow practical application of knowledge to be measured, such as projects, presentations, and portfolios.
Development of transversal skills: In addition to subject-specific knowledge, a good learning experience should contribute to the development of transversal skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, effective communication, and time management.
The central role of technology
From a user's point of view, there is nothing worse than having interesting training content available but having to access it through a repellent platform that makes every interaction difficult... For companies that pay attention to the Learning Experience it is therefore essential to equip themselves with an effective LMS (Learning Management System) that is flexible and user-friendly. The characteristics of a good LMS are:
Intuitive user interface: An LMS should have a clear and easy-to-navigate interface that allows users to easily find materials, courses, and assessments. A user-friendly interface reduces the technology learning curve and allows learners to focus on the content.
Mobile compatibility: Given the widespread use of mobile devices, it is essential that an LMS be optimized for tablets and smartphones. This allows learners to access learning materials anytime and anywhere, thus increasing learning flexibility.
Multimedia support: An LMS should support various multimedia formats, such as video, audio, and interactive graphics. These tools can help make the material more interesting and improve understanding of the topics covered.
Collaboration and communication tools: Features such as discussion forums, group chat, and video conferencing encourage collaboration and communication between learners and teachers, making learning more dynamic and interactive.
Customization and scalability: An effective LMS should offer customization options to suit the different needs of teachers and learners. In addition, it should be scalable to accommodate a variable number of users and courses, without losing performance.
Tracking and reporting tools: The system should provide advanced tools for monitoring learner progress, allowing teachers to view detailed reports on course completion, assessment scores, and time spent on materials.
Integration with other platforms and tools: An LMS should be able to integrate easily with other software used in education, such as resource management systems, content authorization tools, and online conferencing platforms.
Security and data protection: It is also important to ensure the security of user data. An LMS must comply with privacy and data protection regulations, such as the GDPR, and must offer robust security measures to protect students' personal information.
Ongoing support and updates: Finally, it is essential that the LMS provider offers reliable technical support and continues to develop and update the system to adapt to technological developments and educational needs.
Learning Experience, the present of learning
Designing training today means designing experiences. Only companies that understand and embrace this principle can aspire to engage their people and make training an indispensable asset for growth.
